My last german shepherd dog (Deefer) was a rescue and was only vaccinated to go to the home where I got him from and I lost him at the age of 6 years. It does make me wonder. My first german shepherd was only vacinated as a puppy and he lived until 10 years.

I think this is an excellent blog to have Ann, to share experiences.

Excellent info Anne, glad you did this blog. I've grown up and owned German Shepherds all my life (48 year), I only vaccinated once in the 70's and my 1 year old girl Sheba, died two weeks later. I only did it because I thought the vet knew better. I don't give any vaccinations at all. I also feed a raw diet too. Thats it for now. I will post more later. Just hope this gives dog, cat & other animal owners a voice for their charges. PS your fur kids are gorgeous. Karen xxx

Hi, good info about vax's on here!! Am well impressed!! We have always done puppy jabs and 12 month booster then no more. We lost two pups exported to the US due to parvo/rabies jabs. Our next litter came along and we kept a male, I couldnt take him ofr his jabs, the very thought made me feel sick. He is now 18 months old and the picture of health, raw reared and raw fed now, and no vax's at all and he will remain so. We will NEVER vax another dog of ours ever again.

We vaccinated our previous two GSDs as pups and they lived to 13 and 14 with no boosters. Our current boy Jenz was vacced as a puppy and has had no boosters. He is fit and well. Our rescue GSD was vacced by her owners and described as 'not up to date'. She is nine and fit and well. As a nurse I would expect everything to be evidenced based, the research must be out there, perhaps that's a little project for me.

My border collie 'Sonny' , shortly after his booster vaccination (aged nearly 4) became unwell for 3-4 days following this. it was some 3 weeks later that he had a very sudden and acute onst of haemolytic anaemia. he was rushed to an emergency vets clinic where his blood pcv was just 10 . he was given an immediate and unmatched blood transfusion , and stabilised for nearly 2 days. His blood count plummeted after 36 hours to 8 and since no other donor dogs were available the vet used blood from one of her own dogs. (for which I will be eternally grateful to her for) Although he was very weak after 2 weeks in the vet clinic he had survived and had a drug regime of Azothiaprine and prednisolone.. This was reduced by 50% every month as his blood levels improved. about a month after stopping all medication it was seen that his platelets were decreasing. The vet phoned me at work and said he had very few platelets remaining in his blood and was 'in grave danger of bleeding' so he began the regime of Azothiaprine and prednisolone again but this time as his blood improved the vet (who was working closly with the SW veterinary centre in Bristol by now) said we should decrease his medication at a much slower rate then during the IMHA episode. against all that he had been through survived again although his liver functionwas very poor for many months so he had medication for that as well. I asked the vet if she thought the IMHA could have been triggered by his booster because of that few days when he didn't want to go out for a run, which in hindsight isn't a 3 nearly 4 year old border collie's way of things. Today he remains on just 5mg of prednisolone a day. He's nearly 10 years old and has cost a fortune in vets bills over his life time (he's worth it!!) He hasn't , nor will he ever be given a booster vaccination since the onset of his IMHA and thrompcytopaenia. I've had emails for USA and there are reports of dogs having survived and then at a later date being re-vaccinated only to relapse with IMHA and go on to die. I realise this is a site many for GSD dogs but I just thought Sonny's and mine experience may add some more information to the 'to vaccinate or not debate' Vida Appleton

I have a BIG problem, I agree with the blog totally, I am returning to the UK from NZ and I cannot bring my 2 GSD back without vaccinations, which I am told are the rules, if they dont have the vacs they cant travel, I am sick with worry that they will have the vaccines and then become ill upon arrival and the whole process would be a waste of time and life for my beauties, I really dont know how to get around this problem. Is there any way I can stop them doing the vaccinations?
